Tone character

Sunbeam delivers the warmest, most flexible voice in the DR bass lineup — pure nickel wrap over round core gives a vintage-leaning character that sits between the aggressive Hi-Beam stainless and classic flatwound warmth. Low-mids bloom slowly, attack is rounded, and the voice has genuine character without the aggressive edge of stainless alternatives.

Best for

Jazz Bass players chasing the 70s session sound where roundwound warmth matters more than slap pop. P-Bass players who find Slinky Bass too bright but don't want to commit to flatwounds. Also favored by fretless players for the melodic mwah the soft attack produces.

Durability

Round-core pure nickel has typical 4-6 week peak tone. DR's hand-finishing adds to perceived quality but doesn't change the inherent lifespan of uncoated nickel wound. Break rate is low at standard bass gauges.

Climate notes

Pure nickel resists oxidation slightly better than nickel-plated steel. The round-core construction provides marginal climate benefit over hex-core alternatives. Tropical-climate bassists see fine usable tone for 4-5 weeks.

    • Thanks for reviewing these strings. To be honest, I believe this would have been a lot more useful if you had the player using the same bass (or the same type of bass, at least), playing similar stuff. Going from playing slap basslines a J bass with X strings to 60s motown on a P on a set of different strings doesn't h

    • I still have no idea how these strings compare. Different basses with different strings and different playing techniques = ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
